I was born into the lower class, Wore holes in the same clothes my brothers had. When my father's job couldn't make ends meet We found our feet in the dusty streets. You spin your wheels long enough they'll dig holes in the ground. You tell yourself you'll leave but your roots are climbing down. You could rip up the earth, you could chop at the tree. But if you find her here there's no way you'll ever leave. I've been falling Always crawling But I don't know why.
2.
I left the city, Drove south of town. Watched reflections of tears roll down her cheeks, But why would she question what we've both known. Still she remembers me She even swore to me When I'm feeling weak I could seek her out, But I can't stay. Oh, to go back home and find her just as I had known. You'll find it hidden there beyond The trees my father planted in the lawn When I was just a When I was only just a boy. My mother's necklace lies sunk into the rising clay. When your mother called to tell you that You won't be welcome home, Well I don't care what she says. Shine your bright lights on our body when the fire burns away. Then we'll rip up the streets and the sidewalks and Burn each bridge we cross When we come back through the town. We'll both take one last look around And shake the dust from both of our heels. Then it falls to the ground. Oh, to go back home and find her just as I had known. You'll find it hidden there beyond The trees my father planted in the lawn When I was just a When I was only just a boy. My mother necklace lies sunk into the rising... We all were hidden there beyond The trees but one day soon we'll all be gone And I am just a Still I am only just a boy. My mother's necklace lies sunk into the rising clay.

Stay Inside 02:49
The farce is over A light reflection in each other's eyes. Lived half a lifetime but we are tired And we need to rest. Its coming up stars Its coming up golden We don't have a lot to do with it. It was in my car When it was stolen. I haven't missed it since. The cop patrolling put his flashlight to my mirror On a quiet country road. When the smoke had cleared, when the fire died Both our cars were towed. Its coming up red Its coming up sapphire I don't have a lot to do with it. A couple old brides We're looking for lovers But all we find are kids. On a night like tonight even quiet is quiet and The spurs of the moment are mostly invited. Because a lie is a lie you can give till you die. When all the doors are flung open wide Its coming up short I'm forced to stay inside. I'm forced to stay inside, stay inside.

Pretty Girls 02:33
All the pretty girls out in this city Their sparkling eyes on every street All the foolish boys walk by so carefully They salivate over all the innocence. The purity and fragile shadow catch Wandering eyes collecting what's been cast Here's a brand new image we document and file But the colors bleed and the idea is lost. If we're only going through the motions And getting caught up in emotion Are we really only going through the motions?
5.
Dreams 03:43
These streets are flooded with our lies, Last breaths and meaningless goodbyes. When you left it was cold and I was fast asleep. I swear I never dreamt you'd leave. Because in November each burning ember was aflame. Chicago Street sunk underneath the cold, So we stayed inside, but neither one of us could hold on till New Year's Day when I should have said what I knew, But I held my tongue. But Somewhere with our dreams we let die I have fixed my eyes. These streets are flooded with our lies, Last breaths and meaningless goodbyes. On Jackson Street I swear I found out like the rest. I tried to walk head high, but I was stumbling at best. And every wish was well, but all I tried to tell was the truth. But it came out wrong. But somewhere with our dreams we let die I have fixed my eyes. These streets are flooded with our lies, Last breaths and meaningless goodbyes.

All the windows have been closed. The blinds have been drawn shut. My eyes have both adjusted to the lack of light That's in this house. This is no bakery, so don't ask me for bread. This is no boarding house, so don't ask for a place to rest your head. There is no well here, so don't ask for a drink. If you were on the street, Back where you should be I would be at peace. Oh Jesus, we are such a wicked lot. See the dirt that still there lingers On the sweating face I've got. Lead us like strangers down to the grass Where we'll lay our bodies down into the path Of all the busy working ants. Beside the waters that still there flow As long ago. Lead on, we rise and pour out our hearts Like water before your throne. Our skin has grown old Our bones are broken. The path lies hidden by blocks of stone. So come now to this once great city As she herself groans and turns away. Is any suffering like this affliction? The cries are many but the heart is faint. But I know what is my portion And so I will wait for you.

Power Chords 03:46
Well this sound is so old. You could never sound like one of those boys. You can tune your guitar any way that you like, But its just hiding behind that noise. Your songs are all so slow A little bounce should get you where its at. You can write what you want to write, This is only my opinion. Your songs are making you weak, You should try some power chords. Its only my opinion, But its what you asked me for. What's with all the minor chords? Are you really so down, or is it just in style? All the songs about the one who got away, What do you think she'd have to say? Your songs are making you weak, You should try some power chords. Its only my opinion, But its what you asked me for. Give it some blood, you'll make it real. Maybe then you can look me in the eyes. Use those metaphors lightly boys, Cause this is rock and roll. Its just rock and roll. Your songs are making you weak, You should try some power chords. Its only my opinion, But its what you asked me for.

We fought daylight savings in my home town. We didn't want to speed our clocks up, And didn't want to slow them down. Because our farmers still wake in the same way to tend to their crops In the morning when the rooster crows, Be it five or six o'clock. Our old men still tee off at the first faint signs of light, Driving white plastic down the fairway, And somewhere down the road his grandkids have been standing Since long before the sun came up. But the sun, beautiful sun, It shines on us now Where it wasn't shining once. Every crack I used to know has been paved and filled back in Where I used to ride my back on the street where I once lived And they keep building and building, Though the money's dried up. There is still hope in Indiana And still many men to trust. But the sun, beautiful sun, It shines on us now Where it wasn't shining once. So send the buses out with their flashing lights To the neighborhoods dark before sunrise Where the children laugh and play out in the streets. So we hold our pens with the tightest grip They wonder who changed what? We will say, "We did!" And when four years end we will hold our heads up high.
9.
Buckle up, drive safely. We wouldn't want to lose you, You're what we've grown accustomed to. If you fall asleep, just dream. Don't toss and turn, just rest easy. I promise that we'll make time for you If that's what you were wanting when you left. We'll walk to that record store Where you bought that Costello record That I told you would change your mind. Did it change your mind? In another couple months When you've found what you wanted to We will sing the same old songs, But we'll mean them more. So let the smoke hang in the air When you fall asleep tonight. Please be patient. We study numbers and money When I can keep the kid from biting me. So its a challenge but I still try to find the time. I'd teach the basics of biology If I could keep them all from fighting me. But that's work, and its getting harder to separate myself. I do the work of middle-aged women, I grew a beard to hide behind. Though I've been working for the paycheck, I hear some work to change lives. At my age you need to find a good woman And start living the family life. Though I've never been good at making money...
10.
...and even when I'm dreaming I still can't catch my breath, and sleep doesn't feel a thing like rest When every night I spend alone I still feel you in my bones. My father swears its love that kills us, It just takes its own sweet time. I chased your love through busy streets But I still came out alive. When I begged you not to go Your head was wet and hot as fire. You spoke to me from in your sleep, "Cinnamon, cinnamon, cinnamon." Just lay on back, its almost ended, And all that's broken will be mended. I would follow you whatever you went through, If my love could swallow you. Because when you wrapped your arms around me, in every pulse I felt it rising. Your blood is a harmony that sings along in key With every time my heart beats.
